memory, made and remade

Rebrand rationale, prepared for Mike. This document is written decision-first: each section states what we chose, then why. Every element here was weighed deliberately, so where you push back, push back on the reasoning.

A new name

We are renaming the product. Synap served us well while we built. But it sits close to several other names already in use, and this product deserves a name that is unmistakably its own. What follows is the case for the name we chose.

03/the namereg · nomenclature

The new name is dentate: a real word that is true about this product three ways at once.

Why

Real words beat coined syllables. The category names itself with invented fragments and version numbers, names that mean nothing until marketing spends money to fill them. Dentate arrives with its meaning pre-installed, and the meaning is not decorative. It is the product thesis, layered three deep.

Regeneration. The dentate gyrus is the one region of the adult brain that keeps growing new memory for life. A memory company named for the organ of lifelong memory formation is not a metaphor stretch. It is the anatomy.

Separation. The gyrus performs pattern separation: it keeps similar experiences distinct so they can be recalled without blurring. That is, precisely, the product's core function, records kept distinct, durable, and retrievable.

Provenance. Latin dens, tooth. Dentate means toothed, notched: a mark cut in, not written on. Indentures were contracts cut along a toothed line so each half could prove the other. The root has meant a mark that authenticates for most of recorded law.

One word, and it holds the whole argument: memory that grows, memory kept distinct, memory that can prove itself. The name is the thesis.

den·tate

DEN-tayt /ˈdɛnteɪt/ adjective; also in the anatomical noun dentate gyrus

EtymologyFrom Latin dentātus, toothed, from dēns (genitive dentis), tooth. Cognate with dental, indent, and indenture.
1
Anatomy

Of the dentate gyrus: the tooth-edged fold of the hippocampus, one of the only regions of the adult brain that keeps growing new neurons; the gate where experience is separated into distinct, durable memory.

2
Computing

dentate, the cognition substrate named for it: a memory system that grows new records the way the gyrus grows new cells, and holds every one in a chain it can prove.

3
From the root

Notched or toothed along an edge; bearing a mark cut in, not written on, and therefore impossible to smooth away. Hence, of a record: permanent, tamper evident.

04/positioningreg · category claim

Dentate is the system of record for everything you know. Not memory for an AI. The record itself.

What everyone else sells

"Memory for AI": a cache that makes a model a little smarter.

  • Exists to serve the model, not the person
  • Disposable by design; no claim of permanence or proof
  • A feature any platform can absorb in a release cycle

What dentate is

The permanent, sovereign, provable record of what you know, for a person, a team, or a company.

  • Substrate, not an AI; every surface works with no agent attached
  • AI is an optional connector that plugs into the record
  • Timestamped, verifiable, yours: a record with standing
Why

It is a category we can own. Nobody in the AI-memory field says "system of record." The phrase carries thirty years of enterprise weight, and it is sitting unclaimed at the exact center of what this product actually does. Claiming it costs nothing and puts every "memory feature" competitor on the wrong side of the comparison.

It is enterprise-credible and defensible. "Second brain" invites a demo. "System of record" invites a procurement conversation. The claim is backed by architecture, provable, timestamped, sovereign, which cache products cannot retrofit.

The strongest markets need it as a matter of record. In the regulated professions, a defensible timestamped record is not a nice-to-have, it is the substance of the work:

Everyone else is building memory for the AI. We are building the record the AI has to answer to.

05/the crestreg · primary mark

The mark is the Crest: one drawn form that reads three ways, each of them true.

A letter D

The name's initial, drawn as a solid, certain form. At a glance it simply says dentate.

A mountain in the counter

The negative space inside the D is a peak: the dentate gyrus's own toothed silhouette. The mark is anatomically true, not arbitrary.

A notch at the rim

The summit meets the rim as a cut: dens, the mark cut in that authenticates. Provenance, carried in the mark itself.

Why the details matter

Every proportion is engineered, not eyeballed. The current round of the Crest sits on a computed balance line: the summit axis is placed where the silhouette's mass actually balances, a fixed point derived from the drawing's own constants, not a nudged value. The construction study opposite shows the arithmetic. When a proportion looks "slightly off," it is usually optically corrected on purpose.

The ember lives only in motion. A single warm cell appears in the animated mark and nowhere in the static one: neurogenesis, a new memory being born, reserved for the moments the product is alive.

It scales as one form. The same geometry survives from a 16px favicon to an iOS Liquid Glass app icon and an Android adaptive icon, with no simplified variant needed.

This is why the Crest should not be casually redrawn. Moving any line moves an argument.

Lowercase dentate, built from dots. A serif for the record. Registration marks, not pills.

Prose · the recordNewsreader

Set in a text serif with a document register, so the product reads like what it is: a record, written to last, not an app shouting for attention.

Labels · dataSpline Sans Mono
T3registration label · sealed · 17:13 UTC
Why

Lowercase, because a substrate does not announce itself. The wordmark sits quiet and modern, infrastructure rather than logo-as-hero.

Bitcount, because every letter is made of dots. Cells, accumulating into words: memory made visible at the letter level. And the family's own name, "bit count," is exactly on the nose for a memory record. The live wordmark is variable and interactive, it breathes, because the record is alive.

Newsreader, because the register is documentary. Prose set in a real text serif signals record, testimony, permanence, where the category's default geometric sans signals yet another dashboard.

T3 registration labels, because stock pills are the category's tell. Eyebrows and metadata are set as small registration marks, a tick, mono uppercase, a rule, the visual grammar of calibration and proof sheets. These are precisely the craft details the quick copycat CSS sites skip, so in this category, craft itself reads as credibility. Every detail is a deliberate signal.

07/what it looks likereg · live surfaces

The site shows the product and the proof, not a metaphor.

The hero is the record itself: a verifiable, sealed timeline, cycling through the people it serves. No abstract node-graph, the category's most overused image, and no mystery meat. It shows the value plainly while protecting the method: you see that entries are sealed and provable, never how.

Why it matters

The name arrives with clear room around it. The addresses that matter are open today, and they spell the product's own name.

That is not just thrift. It is a clean, defensible foundation from day one: no negotiations, no coexistence agreements, no future ransom for the .ai, and no confusing neighbor a customer might land on. The brand controls every door it might be entered through.

09/why every detail mattersreg · close

This is not a follower brand. Every element points at one idea: the provable record of a mind.

The name carries the anatomy, the function, and the proof. The mark draws them. The type sets them. The site demonstrates them. The namespace secures them. Nothing in this identity is a styling preference; each choice is load-bearing, and each one reinforces the others.

Push back where you see a real problem, that is what this document is for. But push on the reasoning, not the surface. If a change survives the argument laid out here, it belongs in the brand. If it only survives "I'd have done it differently," it does not.
